delayed while conducting water testing for the department in Digby. After meeting in Halifax, they returned to Prince Edward Island.

The wedding was arranged for 9:00 am on Saturday, September 16, 1950 at St. Malachy’s church, where they were married by Father Wilfred. Kathleen’s bridesmaid was Alice McCloskey, one of her best friends. After the ceremony, the members of the wedding party went to Heckbert’s Studio in Summerside to have their photographs taken. A reception for 40 people was held at the Mulberry Lodge in Summerside for 11:00 am. It featured a sit—down meal costing $1.25 a plate, which Kathleen paid for herself (it was customary for the bride’s parents to pay for wedding receptions.)

The formal ceremonies over, it was back to the Keefe house in Kinkora

for a dance. All the furniture was pushed back and the party went on from early afternoon until well into the evening.

Kathleen’s one regret that day is that Sister Mary Angela and Sister Mary Edith were not allowed to attend her wedding because of congregational restrictions.

Kathleen and Bill left after the dance for their honeymoon. They caught the ferry in Borden, and drove to Amherst where they spent their first night together. After Sunday mass the following morning, they drove to Antigonish where they stayed the night before departing for the Cabot Trail. Bill owned an automobile imported from England, and the little car took them for a breathtaking journey on a magnificent and awe—inspiring highway carved into the edge of ancient mountains.

After returning to Prince Edward Island, they were hosted with two showers, one in Kinkora and one in Emerald. Kathleen and Bill then left for Halifax where they would be living. They moved into the upper level of a duplex on Elizabeth Drive, overlooking Chocolate Lake. Kathleen had left what little furniture she had in Ottawa. Bill had been living in a duplex in the north end of Halifax, which consisted of kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, but few furnishings. They had to start furnishing their new apartment from scratch.
