Christmas in November 2002 — filmily dinner held at Kathleen’s after the announcement at the WA. Murphy Centre During the past number of years, most family members living on the Island meet to celebrate Christmas Day at the home of Shawn and Yvette following their own individual festivities earlier in the day. On any given year, there are some 30 to 40 people who have a late dinner, usually followed by card games. Over the holiday season, Kathleen and Shawn travel to Kinkora and Emerald to visit with relatives. For the Murphys, Christmas is still all about family. One of the favourite Christmas traditions that Kathleen carried on from her days growing up in Kinkora was making donuts. Donuts were a special treat in the Keefe household at Christmas. Kathleen makes the donuts from scratch, deep fries them on top of the stove and rolls them in cinnamon and sugar. There were always children around to help roll the batches, and Kathleen stored the donuts in a big white can on the kitchen counter where everyone could help themselves. 155
