sweeping changes to the traditional structure and nature of the fishery. These included efforts to reduce the number of fishers and upgrading a number of selected ports. By then, however, the industry was on an upswing. The landed value of the fishery doubled in the 1970s, and with rising prices and new processing technologies, the income of fishermen tripled. Officials of DFO turned their attention to more effective ways of managing the resource and stimulating the growth of the industry. Bill’s responsibilities took him to meetings across the country and overseas. He invited Kathleen to join him on some of these trips, and, with sitters arranged, they enjoyed the time together alone. They traveled to Ireland, and after the meetings were over, took a few days to tour the country. Staying in quaint bed—and—breakfast operations, they traveled to WeXford where the Murphy’s had originated, and to Cork, home of the Keefes. Kathleen was deeply impressed with the beauty of Ireland and the generousity of the people of her ancestral home. On another occasion, Bill was invited to speak at an international fisheries conference in Norway. Kathleen accompanied him on that trip as well, fulfilling her desire to travel and see more of the world. While in Norway, they took a bus trip into the mountains from where they could get a better perspective of the majestic fiords that line the Norwegian coast. As the bus stopped on the precipice of a hill, they got out and peered down to the waters far below them. Still, her family was never far from her mind. What if I fell, she thought. What would happen to the kids at home? Then, at age 56, Bill retired as area manager of DFO. He and Kathleen looked forward to spending more leisure time together, but Bill’s need to remain active and involved led him to accept a position as executive director of the newly—opened office of the National Research Council in Charlottetown. The NRC facilitated technology transfers within the private sector by increasing the capabilities of small and medium enterprises, and Bill thrived with the new challenges.
