mother, Mary Jane ensured there was always a family member available to spend the night at Kathleen’s home.
One of the proudest moments in Kathleen’s life came the day in November of 2002 when the student centre at the University of Prince Edward Island was named after Bill. The previous year, the University of Prince Edward Island had embarked on a major capital campaign.
To help kick—start the campaign, UPEI president Wade MacLauchlan approached Kevin to determine if the Murphy family would be interested in making a financial contribution. Kevin said the family would be getting together later that summer and would discuss the proposal. After the eight family members looked at MacLauchlan’s proposal, Stephen went back to Riverview Drive and, on a small piece of scrap paper, came up with a suggested allocation of the contribution from each of them. Not one questioned the proposed amount.
The family members had decided that naming the new student centre after their father would be a fitting tribute to his achievements and memory, and made a generous leadership gift to the university. Kathleen and her eight children, all of whom had studied at UPEI, attended the
naming ceremony.
