passion for the game, he enjoyed its social aspect. Kathleen regularly played bridge with her sisters, Mary Angela and Marion, and at other times with her friends and neighbours, Marie Carragher and Florence Griffin. The games were accompanied by a lot of boisterous give—and— take, good cheer, spirited competition and the lunch served after the cards had been cleared from the table. When the children were young, Kathleen did not have the opportunity to play bridge as often as she might have otherwise. As the family grew, she gradually resumed the game, playing regularly two to three times a week. One of the games organized by the bridge club in Charlottetown was held on Wednesday afternoons. Kathleen’s son Stephen was invariably pressed into household duties, having to prepare pizza for the the family’s evening meal. Kathleen continues to enjoy playing bridge, and is still an intense competitor. She belongs to the Charlottetown Bridge Club, and generally pays two to three times a week. As a Christmas gift from Kevin, she also hosted an annual bridge party at the—then Off Broadway restaurant on Sydney Street in downtown Charlottetown where 12 of her friends got together for an afternoon and evening of cards, food and drink. Kathleen also took a major leadership role in the Charlottetown Bridge Club. She has held every executive position in the organization, and continues as an active and valued member. For a number of years, she and Michael (an avid bridge player in his own right) organized bridge games for novices and beginners. The sessions were aimed at those who felt intimidated by the more competitive games, and were intended as fun events. These sessions were so successful that they soon attracted upwards of 40 people on a weekly basis. It became a friendly night out for all involved. Kathleen is also certified to act as director at duplicate bridge games. She earned her qualifications as a result of her skills and experience and is widely respected for her knowledge about many of the arcane rules under which games are played. 164 KATHLEEN MURPHY, MAITRIARC
