Another pedlar of vivid memory was a middle-aged gentle¬ man in neat attire who came a number of summers in the early 40s carrying two enormous suitcases, all compartments being filled with attractive household wares. He must have had a car somewhere, but he just seemed to appear from nowhere walking in the lane. One item particularly eye catching for youngsters was an assortment of large multi-colored lead pencils, each one looking two feet long. These were best sellers. At home we could use them full length, but for school they had to be cut to fit into our satchels. These various pedlars gave a lift to the life of yesteryear and one would not want to miss their visitations. Being for the most part "outsiders", they helped broaden our vision of community, while at the same time bringing the store to the people. Above all they assured us of fresh fish for Friday and of roast beef for most Sundays.
