Apart from the Sweet Sixteen song, there was only one other song which had truly captured Alphy’s heart. The second song was Maggie, which Alphy claimed for “our song”. The Maggie song was also sung by Harry Hibbs. When Alphy first heard it, the words really touched him, as it reminded him of his sweetheart, Margurita.
Alphy was rocking to the music, and upon hearing the words of Maggie, he said to Margurita, “Come and listen to this song.”
Margurita was busy in the pantry at the time, preparing a meal. At first she told Alphy that she didn’t have time to stop, but Alphy insisted that she sit beside him and listen to the words of the song. Margurita set aside the food she was preparing and joined Alphy in the kitchen. She sat down to the sweet melody, and listened intently to the words of the song. Words that she would hear many times afterwards:
“I wandered o’er the hill today, Maggie to where the wild daisies first sprung.... the creaking old mill is now still, Maggie since you and I were young.”
Looking intently at his sweetheart, Alphy expressed that she is the Maggie in his life. Together they continued to listen to the words of the song:
“They say I am feeble with age, Maggie my Steps are now slower than then.....
They say we have outlived our time, Maggie as they sing the song we once sung.......
But to me you're as fair as you were, Maggie, when you and I were young.
Margurita looked up, her gaze rested on her husband’s face. She saw a big wet tear trickle down his cheek. She felt deeply touched. She responded “It’s a nice song,” then trying to make him feel better
