Aphy 37. Bunnies Without Ears
On November 21, 1940 Alphy boarded the train for the lumber camps of New Brunswick. His brother, Edmond and father-in-law, Emmanuel also went with him. There were a few other men from Palmer Road and Tignish who were on the train going to the lumber camps.
As the train rolled along, Alphy thought of his little family back in DeBlois. He prayed that God would keep them safe until he returned. It was a long trip to the mainland, and when the train arrived at the station, the daylight had gone, and the night was dark. Alphy, Edmond, and Emmanuel inquired about accommodations. They found out there was a boarding house nearby. They decided to go there for the night, and head to the lumber camp in the morning.
The lady at the boarding house was quite friendly, and gave them supper. During late evening, Alphy noticed the lady going into the bedrooms with a jug of molasses. She dripped the molasses on the floor making a circle with it around each bed. Alphy asked her why was she doing this.
She replied, “Never you mind. You'll find out soon enough.”
The next morning, when Alphy got up, he noticed hundreds of bed ticks caught in the molasses. He, Edmond and Emmanuel lefi there. They couldn’t get to the lumber camps fast enough.
The work at the camp was hard, but the meals were good. There was a bunkhouse, where everyone slept, and the cook prepared excellent meals. Still, Alphy counted the months until the spring, when he would return to Margurita and the children.
At home, Margurita kept busy with the children and the household chores. She found the evenings the longest. After the children were tucked in bed for the night, Margurita would read, or sew by the light of the kerosene lamp. She too missed Alphy, and
